This is the wedding photography blog for Melbourne based photographer Brent Lukey.

Brent combines a documentary and editorial style capturing classic, natural moments without making the day feel like a photo shoot.

He will travel anywhere, but mostly gets about Melbourne, the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, and Geelong.

You can contact Brent on 0427 483 836 and look at more work at his web sites.

The Bride Getting Ready #1

I'm all about less is more with wedding photography and especially when the bride is getting ready. A few photojournalism moments can say so much more than endless make-up shots that all look the same and bloat an album - you can tick off the list many photographers follow, myself too at times: bride with powder brush, bride with eyeliner pencil, buttoning up the dress, earrings in the mirror and so on. In response to this I plan to present a series of 'bride-getting-ready' photos that avoid cliché and show what is really going on in a beautiful or interesting way. Here's the first from a recent wedding at The Prince Deck.

... do we have a photo showing the peplum on my dress?

It's late last Friday right in the heart of Melbourne. Yvette (bride), Dave (groom) and myself are doing a quick shoot in the street. The shots are good, plenty of life and nice light. As we are heading back Yvette says something like 'do we have a photo showing the peplum on my dress?' We make this picture, it's quick and impromptu. Nice suggestion Yvette. I should add that, for me, photos like this seem much more about the photographer than the couple and the families and their interests.

The First Look - Hotel Lindrum, Melbourne.

Dad's 1923 Sunbeam, an engraved ring surprise, a card for the bride ... a moment ... then down to the bar. As a photographer I witness very personal, often emotional, quite private moments, it's a privilege.

Whisky, champagne and a great big party with a splash of romance on The Prince Deck, St Kilda.

A simple slideshow from a smashing recent wedding at The Prince Deck in St Kilda. One photographer, one location and great energy shared by all without the 'bridal' weirdness. Duration 9.02mins.

You can stream or download the HD version here - Jessica and Sharim HD show.

The songs (which are ace) -
'Skinny Love' by Bon Iver
'Lovin' You, Baby' by Charles Bradley

Hey, check out Charles in Melbourne next week at the Corner Hotel as part of Bluesfest Touring.

Making our way to Mural Hall at Myer, Melbourne.

Now most of you know that I'm not a fan of kissing photos, however I like this one from last Saturday at Victoria Barracks.

Sneak Peek - Jessica and Diarmuid - The Prince Deck

Work 2015 has been two months of at times manic, adrenaline filled adventure - driving, talking, meeting, directing, shooting, drinking and laughing with great people while constantly watching the light, the time and getting the shots. Being creative under pressure, avoiding cliche and striving to see things differently (but not too differently) in both wedding and commercial work, while pleasing the client, can be a battle. But it's one I like to tackle.

Here's a sneak peek at a truly beautiful wedding shot last week at The Prince Deck in St Kilda. The incredible flowers and table decorations are by Victoria Whitelaw and her daughter Jessica, who conjured up this abundance of foliage, cushions and candles, of black and gold and stripe table settings with ghost chair. Praise must also go to my friend and occasional assistant Krystal Seigerman for her superb photography included in this selection. From a photographer's point of view it blows my mind what can be achieved with one person, one camera and natural light (at times sunny, at times overcast) against the clock, we are magicians at times. Oh, somewhat embarrassingly I also took a tumble - I hope it's not on video! Oh, happy St Patrick's Day.

The Prince Deck - 'a grand hotel taken over by punk'.

The Prince of Wales hotel in St Kilda has entranced me since I was a teenager. Back then I was fascinated by it's grungy live music scene, a grand hotel taken over by punk. As a pale and skinny punter it was the place to see the Cosmic Psychos and Sonic Youth, a place to perform with my industrial band Denial supporting X or Spiderbait. Energetic, kinetic rock and roll in a Fitzroy Street that was mostly boarded up, a little bit dangerous, and housed in the hotel's basement was a Jewel Food Barn supermarket. For the past 12 years I've continued my affair with this St Kilda landmark, although the vibe is completely different, the car park is now home to The Prince Deck, the style is elegant and designer, classic and contemporary, it's all champagne and canapes. My part these days extends as a photographer who wants to show people they are loved. Here's a few shots from Jessica and Sharim's recent wedding on The Deck - it rocked! And check out dad's great shoes.
