MAP Group Exhibiton Opening - 'Mapping Wonthaggi'

Please join me (us) for the opening of 'MAPping Wonthaggi'. A photographic exhibition that documents the people and places in and around Wonthaggi. By MAPgroup.

6pm. Friday, 4 October 2013
At The Coffee Collective
Shop 1 / 50-52 McBride Ave,
Wonthaggi, Victoria.

MAPping Wonthaggi is the latest instalment of MAPgroup’s ongoing Single Town Project, an initiative that seeks to document the social and environmental character of regional communities.

Single Town Project involves MAPgroup photographers visiting the regional communities and documenting their impressions. To date MAPgroup has documented the central and northern Victorian communities of Ararat, St Arnaud, Ballarat and Hay in NSW.

So why Wonthaggi? The region is heavily endowed with endearing environmental features such as the Bass coast and rolling green pastures. There is a strong presence of a variety of industry such as mining, farming, tourism and civil engineered works. And the people? A more colourful, friendly and welcoming community would be hard to locate.

Participating MAPgroup photographers visited the region over two weekends in late 2012. Several of the photographers shot specific themes and others chose to approach the project as would a photojournalist, reacting to what they witnessed. The collection in its entirety is over 300 images and can be seen in a book available from MAPgroup via their website – mapgroup.org.au.

The exhibited collection has been curated by Marita Smith, a gallery owner and former NGV curator with knowledge of the South Gippsland region. The printed collection will be donated to the Bass Shire for their archives, and the benefit of the Gippsland community.
