Melbourne ... winter ... night.

Weddings and family portraits are shiny. They are bright. The photos that my wedding and portrait clients like best are ones that emphasis the joy of life. This is great but it can influence your work overall. When I'm shooting photojournalism projects often fall into shiny, happy mode, and can overlook the darker, perhaps more interesting side of a portrait or scene. To help with this I deliberately venture out to find more shadow or grunge or colour shifts. Here's an example - some street work during the cold Melbourne winter.

Kaya and Ante's wedding - St Carthage's University Parish and The Peak at Flemington Racecourse

I shot some of my favorite weddings in 2009 and this was one of them. Kaya and Ante had a long day planned with family early, then the wedding, then a park chill out with the bridal party, then some photos, the reception and finally a pro break-dance show to really get the party going. It was everything - fun, dramatic, romantic, emotional, modern, and funky.

nerd alert - nikon shutter actuations

I'm selling a Nikon D200 body that has been in my camera draw unused for several years. While researching the information I needed for an ebay listing it seemed people looking to buy a camera want to know the number of shutter actuations (or number of times the shutter had opened and closed in the camera's lifetime). So I did a search on how I find this magical number and what do you know, everyone tells you to download free software ... really! What a hassle. There is no way I want a little piece of 'free' software for one silly job. So I searched further and low and behold all the information is there to view in Photoshop, or Bridge and probably most other pro and not so pro image editors that can display the image EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) information. You just have to know where to look.

So here's the procedure. Take a JPG with your camera, view the file in Bridge right click on 'file info', follow the tabs to 'advanced', look down the list and click on schema (http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux/) and there's the number of shutter actuations up to and including that shot. See print screen above (click to make it bigger). I hope this helps someone.

Andrea and Michael's album - Greek Orthodox Church of St Eustathios, Sth Melbourne and Comme, Melbourne.

It's been a steady week with portraits, album designs, and meetings. No weddings this weekend so I can spend time with my daughter at her school sleepover and go to my mate Anthony's party. Yay! Here's some of my favourite pages from an album I've been working on.
